SEC Offer Is First For Mays DE

Atlanta, Ga. - Mays High defensive end prospect, A.J. Portee recently picked up his first offer from a SEC program. Portee talked to GAVSV.com about his offer and the latest in his recruiting.

After only one year of High School football, A.J. Portee is already getting interest from some of the top schools around the Southest.  In fact, the 6-foot-4, 180-pounder picked up his first scholarship offer from Vanderbilt last week.

"My old Head Coach called me and he said that Vanderbilt wanted me," said Portee. "He gave me the number to the recruiting coach at Vanderbilt.  So I called them and that's how I found out about my offer.  I talked to Vanderbilt Head Coach Bobby Johnson and Coach Kenny carter."

Auburn, UCLA, California and Georgia Tech are just a few of the schools showing interest. Vanderbilt made a positive impression on Portee by being the first school to offer.

"Vandy is one of the top schools for academics," he said. "It's a top academic school in the SEC. They stress academics real hard up there.  They're trying to keep me at my same position and that's at defensive end."

A bit undersized, Portee racked up 70 tackles, 14 sacks, and two forced fumbles at defensive end as a junior.

"Last year was my first year of playing varsity, so I got a lot of growing to do," said Portee. "A lot of people doubted me.  I'm still a rookie to the game, but I'm working hard to learn as much as I can as quick as I can. Whatever it takes, I'm gonna get it done."

Portee will also be playing at tight end next year.  Right now he is the only tight end listed on the Mays depth chart, so he could see significant playing time as a senior on offense as well.

Other than Vandy, two other schools also stand out for A.J. Portee?

I like Auburn and Central Florida," said Portee. "My Dad went to school at UCF, so I like them a lot."
