Charlton County isn't the two time defending State Champion for nothing. The Indians made a big play on defense to take the lead and never looked back against ferocious Early County Defense. See all of the action in this presentation by ScoutTV.
First Half Highlights
Early County had the ball and the lead to open the second half, but a batted pass fell into the arms of Charlton County defender
D.J. Donley
, and the Indians were back in business deep in Bobcat territory.
The Early County defense picked up the offense though, and forced Charlton County backwards and into a 38 yard field goal attempt. The Bobcats blocked the field goal attempt, and were back in business on their own 33.
Charlton County's offense finally got going again with a long pitch and catch to receiver Terrence Milton. The play got down to the Early County six yardline, but another penalty moved it back to the 11.
Once again, Early County rose to the challenge and forced fourth down and goal from the nine. Early County's defense swarmed
Dwight Dasher
and dropped him for a 10 yard loss (video).
Charlton County was able to hold Early to a punt and take over at their own 30 with 1:53 left in the third quarter. The Bobcats were playing defense on another level through three quarters. They pushed the Indians back three yards and forced another punt.
Early County took a 6-0 lead into the fourth quarter and the ball at midfield facing second and four.
Disaster struck for the Bobcats as Adam Davis wrestled the ball away from quarterback Emmanuel Taylor and sprinted to the endzone for a 50 yard tying score (video). Charlton County added the PAT to forge ahead 7-6 and their first lead of the game.
Taylor wasn't ready to concede the game just yet though, as he zipped a 23 yard seam route out of the shotgun on the first play from scrimmage on the next drive. Charlton County's defense was up to the challenge too though. The Indians slung Taylor backwards, and he lost the ball. Early County recovered, but lost 23 yards on the play.
After a punt, the Indians took over at midfield with 9:22 left to go in the fourth.
Charlton County went to the ground game, and two plays later, the Indians were inside the Bobcat 20. After a first down, Charlton County faced a fourth down and a long three to get to the endzone.
Dasher pitched right to Walker, and he decided to cut it back into the teeth of the Bobcat defense. Walker didn't make it, and Early County took over on its own two.
Taylor came out firing, and hit the same 22 yard seam route he hit on the previous possession. Another completion, and the Early County faithful were rocking with 5:15 left in the game.
D.J. Donley had his sights set on another State Championship though, and he made consecutive big plays including an interception on the Bobcat 40. Charlton took over with a little over four minutes left in the game.
Charlton County ran three straight plays and faced a fourth and one on the Early County 31. The Bobcats used their first time out of the second half. The Indians went for it, and this time they converted as Walker picked up a good seven yards and was close to breaking it.
On a third down with 2:37 left, Walker did break it. Walker took the ball up the middle and sprinted to the endzone for a 13-6 lead. An encroachment penalty on the PAT gave Charlton the chance to for two. Walker made the Bobcats pay for their mistake as he leaped in to the endzone to put the Indians up 15-6 with 2:31 left in the game.
Early County made a valiant effort to come back, but it came up short as Taylor's pass to the endzone was intercepted.
Charlton County advances to the State Finals to try for their third straight State Championship in what looks like the most intriguing matchup of the finals.... Charlton County vs Dublin.
