Atlanta Linebacker is Blowing Up as a Senior

Akeem Dent may be the best player you haven't heard of yet. At 6-2 and 215 pounds, Dent plays linebacker for a Douglass team that has given up 16 points this season in 5A and pitched two shutouts including a 7-0 victory over Morrow on Saturday.

"We're 5-0 right now," said Akeem Dent. "I had about 10 tackles and forced and recovered a fumble against Morrow. We play Stephenson this Friday night."

Douglass beat Washington 2-0 in their first game of the season, and it might be a similar score against the Stephenson Jaguars. Since imploding against Brookwood in a 42-21 defeat, Stephenson has given up just six points in four games including three shutouts.

Dent's big season has attracted the attention of several schools, but he has the talent and the production to be attracting even more scholarships. He is breaking out as a senior. Who has the inside track to sign him?

"I have offers from Ole Miss, Purdue, and Mississippi State. Alabama was the first school to call me on September 1st. Mississippi State, Purdue, Clemson, Alabama, and Ole Miss pretty much call me every week. I'd say those are my Top 5 right now."

Dent has been to one game already, and he has a big one planned for this weekend.

"The only game I've gone to so far is Clemson/Texas A&M. I got to go on the field before the game and talk with Coach Burns. He introduced me to several of the other coaches. I'm planning on going to the Alabama/Florida game this weekend."

Dent knows his Top 5, and he is trying to schedule visits with each of his favorites.

"Purdue is talking to me about visiting sometime in October. Ole Miss wants me to come in November. I know I will definitely visit Alabama and Mississippi State too."

Dent reminds me a lot of Class of 2004 and Florida State signee Jae Thaxton. He is roughly the same size, and he gets from sideline to sideline from his linebacker position.
